The future’s bright, the future’s green

If anything underpinned the last decade – the noughties, as people insist on calling it – it was probably the environment. It was about 2004/5 when the construction trade press suddenly started reporting on eco-friendly construction. And I’m not exaggerating when I said it was sudden. I can’t remember the exact date now, but at the time, I could put my finger on the month that people started promoting it.

There must have been some financial incentive for those few companies to want to promote their ‘green’ credentials so heavily. In fact, being ‘green’ was very quickly followed by ‘greenwash’ – the practice by some companies to be economical with the truth when it comes to their environmental claims.

It says something about a new way of thinking when it comes with its own lexicon – we can happily sit around chatting about carbon footprints, energy efficiency, Kyoto protocol, hybrid engines, and know instantly what each other is saying. More than that, if we see someone leaving the tap running while they brush their teeth, or (heaven forbid) put a half-load of washing on a 90ºC cycle, then we have the same disgust for them as if they were driving drunkenly down the street without a seatbelt on.

There has certainly been a culture-shift in the way we view energy, efficiency, and the environment. Even if we are part of the 50% of the population who stick our heads in the sand when it comes to climate change, there is no escaping the business benefits of being green; whether it be through direct savings made by efficiencies, or the strength it adds to the brand.

Sapa Dualframe advert

If we played at being eco-friendly in the noughties, we must fight with gusto in the teens. Of course, by working with aluminium, you will be heading in the right direction. Not only can aluminium be proven to be sustainable, it also impacts relatively lightly on the environment, when you take into account the way that it is mined, smelted (a high use of hydropower), recycled, and used. Add to this that CAB works on your behalf to promote this to specifiers, and that alumimium products are highly desirable, then aluminium in construction has a bright decade ahead of it.

On behalf of the publishers of Aluminium in Architecture I wish you a very happy Christmas and prosperous New Year.

CHIEF EXEC'S COMMENT

Justin RatcliffeRecord CAB members see the bigger picture

Chief Executive’s Comments – December 2009

I heard an accountant on Radio 4 recently proclaim that the recession was now over and things would continue to get worse. Hardly positive stuff, although technically it is backed by statistics. The Construction Products Association state that construction output is estimated to have fallen in the final quarter by 1.1% compared with a fall of 0.8% in the previous quarter.

Keeping pace with Standards & Regulations

Patrick England, CAB technical consultant

Today, the task of keeping up to date with current and future national, European, and international standards, directives and regulations, as well as accreditation schemes for both products and systems, is the most challenging it has ever been, and there is no sign that things will get easier, in fact it will only get more challenging.

Council for Aluminium in Building

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
