Small talk, big impact
Thanks to Twitter, it is very easy to discover what is being said about things that you are interested in. For example, while Interbuild was taking place last month, I was able to conduct some research (via Twitter) into what visitors and exhibitors were saying about the show at that moment in time. What’s more, I could do this on my phone, in the aisles, before I interviewed other exhibitors and visitors – I felt it gave me a depth of understanding, and a greater context for the discussions we were having.
For those of you have yet to experience Twitter, don’t dismiss it as some pointless trend. Fundamentally, it has the weight of numbers on its side, and those people who are using it tend to be smart, opinionated, and often with a level of influence – this is what I found when I searched for ‘Glassex’ and ‘Interbuild’ before, during and after the show. So, even if you search for something off-beat, the chances are that someone is talking about it, and possibly referring to other websites.
As a result of its ‘instant’ appeal, I often search Twitter alongside the more ubiquitous Google. Today, I did just that, and found a news article from the Sydney Morning Herald (click here for story), about the risk of a bubble forming in the aluminium market. Basically, prices remain high, but stocks are growing. Furthermore, China is set to produce 18% more aluminium next year, and new smelters are coming online, including the Emirates Aluminium Project which is forecast to make 1.4 million tonnes a year.
If supply and demand isn’t properly managed, then it could result in a significant drop in the price of aluminium – the price is already set to average out at $1,885 on the London Metal Exchange next year, compared to $2,060 on November 20 this year.
With this information in my pocket, it makes journalism more relevant. While I may not quote Twitter sources in every news story (I see that Guardian journalists are heading that way) it helps me to remain relevant when interviewing and researching. Maybe it could add a string to your bow too.

CHIEF EXEC'S COMMENT
A View from the Zone
Justin Ratcliffe – chief executive officer – November 2009
So Interbuild 2009 is consigned to history and we all start thinking about and planning for the 2010 version. The show, like any other I guess, has its hardened critics and they will have jumped on the empty spaces in Halls 4 and 5 and the ‘missing brands’. Admittedly I have always been a glass ‘half full’ person but there was actually plenty to lift the spirits.

Council
for Aluminium in Building
The
Council for Aluminium in Building
(CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing
trade associations, the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent
Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association,
all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission
is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry
by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture
and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and
best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members'
business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward
the development of a national training structure for the sector and
have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
