Kawneer steps up to the crease

Inclined curtain walling from architectural aluminium systems supplier Kawneer will feature on a unique collaboration between Leeds Metropolitan University and the setting of some of the greatest moments in First Class and Test Match cricket.

Kawneer’s AA110 curtain walling (which will be inclined 14º from the vertical at the top of the concave south elevation overlooking the ground), AA601 top-hung casement window vents and AA605 low/medium duty swing doors will be installed by Edinburgh-based facade specialists Charles Henshaw on a £21million replacement for the Winter Shed Stand and Media Centre at Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground in Leeds.

Designed by SMC Alsop Architects to a brief that includes targeting a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and uninterrupted sightlines of the matches, the 4,000m² state-of-the-art Carnegie Pavilion is a collaborative project between Yorkshire County Cricket Club and the School of Tourism, Hospitality and Events (THE) at Leeds Metropolitan University.

It will replace and upgrade the existing space with facilities for up to 1,000 people that surpass requirements for test match venues as well as providing unique, practical lecture and teaching areas for THE students and their counterparts in Digital Journalism who will work with the hi-tech facilities of the new media centre.

It will also enable the cricket club offices to relocate to the new pavilion from temporary accommodation in the East Stand which the club intends to develop into a Yorkshire Cricket Museum and Visitor Centre.
