Clean bill of health
Comar Architectural Aluminium Systems has been used on Phoenix Place, located in Basildon, Essex.
Phoenix Place is the head quarters of the local NHS primary health care trust. It was designed by Dovetail Architects, and contractor WA Hills chose Anglia Fixing to complete the glazed element of the facade.
The Comar 5Pi interfaces range is a set of bespoke profiles that mimic the edge of cladding panels so a window can be installed as if it were a panel. In this project the Kingspan Optimo range of cladding panels were selected in a light dust blue. At every storey ribbon windows were incorporated from the Comar 5Pi thermally efficient range. Comar 5Pi tilt and turn windows were selected which can be tilted to allow ventilation as well as, when unlocked, open in to allow cleaning from the inside.
To the perimeter of these windows Comar CS486 and CS487 Kingspan cladding adaptors were fitted which allowed the window to be directly integrated into Kingspan without the need for additional flashings or packings. Comar 5Pi Tilt and Turn were also fitted to the first storey directly fixed into the brick work.
The architect wanted to maintain the ribbon windows even at the corners of the building, which created light into the office and multi-directional views internally. Anglia Fixing used Comar 5Pi corner posts, which allowed the neat corner return as well as maintained the slim sight-lines of the window frames.
To contrast with the Kingspan cladding, Comar 6 curtain walling was installed. Comar 6 offers a slim 50mm sight-line with a multitude of transoms and mullions to cater for all deflection loads and configurations. In this project the architect designed a composite of panels and glass in three and two centres, to disguise floor slabs yet create a light and airey feeling in stairwells.
The successfully completed project is a credit to Anglia Fixing’s site management and the solutions they provided at design stage meant the project ran to time and budget.
