In response to the question: “What is the worst job you’ve done?” the celebrity being interviewed in the weekend paper said: “Selling double glazing.” While there are bad employers in every walk of life and while sometimes people are simply not suited to their job, why does the cliché of the dodgy double-glazing salesman persist? In a business that deals with highly technical products that are affected by a plethora of standards and regulations and that directly affect the end user’s quality of life and the quality of probably their most valuable asset (i.e. bricks and mortar), why is the role so often denigrated?
While there is little doubt that we Brits love a deal, witness our enthusiastic adoption of Black Friday, is it time for our industry to further improve how we sell, particularly to homeowners? In an era where we all have smartphones and tablets with more computing power than an Apollo space mission, we should be able to provide tailored advice for each building based on both the science and on the specific needs and preferences of the building owner. Windows are made to measure, why not the information, advice and guidance that is needed when deciding which ones to install? Read More

Busy November for CAB

The highlights of a busy November for CAB have been updating members on contractual issues and the launch of a huge Pavilion at the FIT Show 2017.
Our latest contractual awareness seminar held in Basildon, Essex last week was again well attended and well received. Together with the other seminars held in Birmingham and Sheffield during the year there has been a near 100% attendance. Presenter Geraldine Fleming, Executive Director, Knowles has covered ‘20 Top Contractual Nightmares’ and ‘Pre & Post Contractual Awareness’ which has featured a number of topics including: Tender issues; Liquidated damages; Defects; Variations and Payments; Damage; Collateral warranties; Claims and Insolvency. The seminars been able to resolve a number of member queries, suggest new and improved internal processes and highlight best practice. We are planning to run at least three more in 2017 and would be delighted to supply further information to any fabricators who are interested in attending the event which is for CAB members. Housebuilding booms after Brexit lull
Contracts to build homes rose by more than a third in value to £2.3billion last month over September, according to the latest Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analyst Barbour ABI.
The residential sector monthly contract value increased by 34 per cent in October when compared to September.

…and ‘Change of use’ upturn adds even more homes
New homes created in England by change of use, such as from offices and shops, rose by nearly half in 2015/6 over the previous year, with 30,600 new residential units, a substantial contributor to the 189, 650 new dwellings added to the total housing stock.
Figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), reveal that traditional new-build properties rose by 8,860 units to 163,940. But the most marked increase was ‘change of use’, with 30,600 new units compared with 20,650 the year before. Of these, 12,824 were offices converted into flats.

Simply the best
It was a night to remember when a near-record 630 guests gathered to applaud the industry’s brightest and best in the G16 Awards at the Hilton, Park Lane, on Friday 18th November.
Thirteen winners came away with the coveted trophies at this, the thirteenth annual event and, say the judges, the choice of winners was down to anything but luck, with every single category proving a tougher decision than ever in choosing the best.

FIT set to be ‘biggest UK ali event’
FIT Show organisers say next year’s event is set to be “the biggest gathering of aluminium suppliers ever assembled at a UK fenestration trade show.”
More than thirty companies are expected to feature aluminium framed products on their stands. However, they say, the standout feature at the 2017 FIT Show is the large number of window and door systems suppliers that are launching new products specially developed for the UK residential market.

Roof-Maker founders sell for £30million
Rachel Owen and Scott Nicholas, co-founders of rooflight, skylight and bi-fold business Roof-Maker, today announced the sale of the company for £30million to funds managed by Next Wave Partners LLP (“NWP”).
The two have re-invested alongside NWP and banking partner, Pricoa, along with members of the existing management team. The business will continue to operate from the facilities in Leicester and Scott Nicholas will remain in the role of Chief Design Officer.

Window surveyor sentenced after ‘Double Glazing Taskforce’ swoop
A former window surveyor, who failed to declare his earnings to dodge over £59,000 in Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions, has been sentenced.
Andrew Overton, 55, was paid £255,000 in commission over a six-and-a-half-year period on the sales he generated for a national window company but he didn’t complete Self Assessment tax returns. The fraud was discovered as part of HMRC’s Double Glazing Taskforce, which targeted individuals working in the industry suspected of not paying enough tax.

Emmegi and Elumatec owner acquires Camäleon
Cifin Group, owner of a number of manufacturing companies including Eliumatec and Emmegi, has signed to buy shares equal to 100% of the share capital of CAMäleon Produktionsautomatisierung GmbH of Dettenhausen, Germany.
CAMäleon, with sales around EUR 750,000, specialises in the development and distribution of software for multi-axis machining centres under the Puma System brand.
