The impact of Brexit on standards and regulations
Justin Furness – CAB Technical Director
For my short address at the recent CAB Members’ Meeting, held at Mercedes Benz World on 12 October 2016, I attempted to provide some clarity around the possible impact of Brexit on standards and regulations. At this point in time nothing has changed in this regard and it is very much business as usual. This should come as no surprise as, in case you had not noticed, we have actually not left the European Union yet…
 |
It is also worth pointing out that standards-making in particular is led by private organisations. The national standards bodies such as BSI in the UK and DIN in Germany are private organisations; the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) is an international non-profit association that is independent from any individual stakeholder, although of course it operates within the framework of EU Regulation. This highlights an important issue for the UK post-Brexit: where should we be positioned with respect to EU Regulations? Perhaps this is a: “What has the EU ever done for us?” moment (and no, we do not want answers on a postcard). Read More
I hope you enjoy this month's issue.

CAB Q3 Survey:
Strong Year Ahead
Justin Ratcliffe, (CAB Chief Executive)
CAB Chief Executive, Justin Ratcliffe looks at rising confidence in the very latest Q3, 2016 CAB State of Market Report and reflects on the recent CAB Regional Members’ event at Mercedes Benz World, Weybridge which highlighted a number of key initiatives.
The very latest Q3, CAB State of Trade Survey highlights strong signs of optimism in the year ahead with the caveat of rising unit costs. With the wider construction sector showing growth for the 14th consecutive quarter, CAB members’ expectations for the next quarter recovered considerably with 53% net balance anticipating an increase in sales over the next quarter while 80% net balance anticipated a rise in the next 12 months – the highest confidence level since Q2, 2015. This Month's News
Building demand bucks Brexit in Q3 – FMB
Consumer demand for building work remained resilient in the three months following the vote for Brexit, according to new figures from the Federation of Master Builders.
Commenting on the results of the first UK-wide survey of the SME construction sector post-referendum, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: “Ongoing workloads for construction SMEs remained remarkably resilient in the months following the referendum vote, suggesting that consumer demand – which accounts for the bulk of SME work – has held up far better than anticipated. Some of the other key indicators of SME activity, such as employment levels, anticipated workloads and new work enquiries, are all positive, albeit showing slowed growth compared to the previous quarter.

Bespoke Solutions in Aluminium

In an occasional feature for Aluminium in Architecture Wojciech Brozyna - MD of Aluprof UK reinforces the argument for specifying aluminium.
Why specify aluminium? Some of the reasons that spring to mind are ‘strength’, ‘durability’ and ‘recyclability’, it is the latter that makes the specification of aluminium a green choice for architects as aluminium is virtually 100% recyclable many times over. Today over 50% of all aluminium extruded comes from recycled content which uses just 5% of the original energy used to create the aluminium in the first place. So why don’t we just use more recycled aluminium, well, we just can’t get enough to meet demand! Since 1880, when aluminium became a commercial reality, 75% of all the aluminium produced is still in active service, I don’t think many other building materials can boast such credentials.
