Justin RatcliffeJustin Furness – CAB Technical Director

It was my privilege to attend the inaugural AGM of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) this week. We are members of ASI and part of its Standards Committee, where tools to support responsible sourcing claims for aluminium are being developed; and more on ASI another time. The venue for the meeting was provided by a well-known German car maker and the facilities were superb. Particularly interesting was the factory tour, where 40,000 workers are employed. A new car is produced every 30 seconds and on average only once a year is it expected that identical vehicles will be next to each other in the production line; mass customisation on a grand scale.

So why do we not construct buildings in the same way? Perhaps the recent announcement by Legal & General that they are to start building homes in a factory near Leeds is another step in this direction. In theory, offsite manufacturing is also able to make use of emerging technologies, such as BIM and 3D printing. It could also help to bridge the performance gap, by ensuring that the building designed is the one that’s built. While not everyone will want to live in an identical home to their neighbours, if the personalisation, the performance and the price is right, what’s not to like?

Council for Aluminium in Building
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the
bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural
Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
