Pushing the Envelope

Justin RatcliffeJustin Furness – CAB Technical Director

A recent report by the New London Architecture forum and property consultant GL Hearn says that a total of 436 tall buildings are in the development pipeline across London, of which 119 have been proposed or approved since this time last year. More than 80 tall buildings – here classed as those with more than 20 storeys – are under construction: 233 have received planning approval and a further 114 are somewhere in the application or pre-application parts of the system. In comparison, 19 tall buildings were identified as being completed in London in the last year.

With the use of aluminium and the demands on the building envelope ever increasing, as clients demand ever greater levels of performance from the façade, how do technology and regulation keep pace?

Council for Aluminium in Building
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the
bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural
Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
