A tale of two halves

Justin RatcliffeJustin Furness – CAB Technical Director

While the following observations are based on my perceptions rather than a scientific study, so I stand to be corrected, there were signs at the FIT Show that awareness of Part Q1, concerning security in new dwellings, is increasing. On the other hand, it was harder to find any references to BIM at the show.

Sapa Dualframe advert

Perhaps this is a reflection of a residential focus to the event, given that Part Q1 only applies in relation to new dwellings (at least for now). Perhaps this is a reflection that despite the government’s mandate for all centrally funded departments to provide Employer’s Information Requirements from April last year, this is yet to filter down to all parts of the supply chain.

Senior Aluminium Systems

Of course, awareness is one thing; understanding is another, and the fact that there are different approaches to compliance with Part Q1 was in evidence at the NEC. Choice is no bad thing and one size will not fit all, but it can sometimes create confusion when trying to determine the “best” approach for your situation from all the available options. Read More

CAB Hails Pavilion at the FIT Show 2017 ‘Great Success’

Justin Ratcliffe, (CAB Chief Executive)Justin

CAB has hailed the FIT Show 2017 as a great success overall with 34 member companies exhibiting and 15 of those supporting the vibrant 518m2 CAB Pavilion which boasted some exciting product launches. Just under 10,000 unique visitors attended over the 3 days and it was clear that an excellent cross section of the aluminium in building residential supply chain had come out with the consensus that exhibitors had really ‘gone large’ with their stands. The CAB Pavilion proved to be an excellent meeting point with considerable interest in the benefits that the Association could offer both Fabricators and Installers.

One of the key talking points on the Pavilion was the new CAB Skills Card offering essential 1 day training courses in Fabrication or Installation which incorporated 3 NVQ Level 2 Units. Read more

A big showing by the aluminium sector helped to swell the figures, giving what organisers say was the first significant showing of its kind in over three decades.

Growing influence of rental market – Palmer

A booming private rental market was highlighted by Robert Palmer of Palmer Market Research as one of the major factors driving long-term change in the window and door industry.

Speaking to a FIT Show seminar audience, he said a drop in home ownership from its 2005 peak had seen private rental more than double to 4.5million properties in the same period – a market he said was tougher and more price-driven.

Council for Aluminium in Building
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the
bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural
Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and
the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for
well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the
architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of
aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a
whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical
standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In
addition we are driving forward the development of a national training
structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to
assist in this activity.
