CAB Looking Forward to 2017!

Justin Ratcliffe, (CAB Chief Executive)Justin

With 2017 now just a couple of days away it is perhaps worth reiterating that confidence still exists within the aluminium in building supply chain. Our Q3, 2016 Survey showed 80% net balance of CAB members believe their sales will increase in the 12 months ahead, although concerns remain over rising unit costs and currency fluctuations post Brexit.

Within the Trade Association, we anticipate an exciting year ahead with new fabricator/installer training and other new member services being central to CAB’s value propositions. With fabricator membership growing more than 25% in 2016, it was the ideal time to partner with the FIT Show 2017 and launch a new CAB Aluminium Pavilion. The fantastic response is perhaps unsurprising as, according to Palmer, since 2008 aluminium in domestic glazing has seen exponential growth of 37% in value terms, while the market as a whole has grown by just 2%.

Senior Aluminium Systems

Across the construction sector as a whole output in general is expected to be broadly flat in 2017 and 2018, but this masks significant growth in sectors such as infrastructure and education where we believe there are significant opportunities for aluminium.

Thank you for following Aluminium in Architecture in 2016 and on behalf of everyone at CAB we wish you a very happy New Year!

I hope you enjoy this month's issue.

This Month's News

Construction falls flat in November

After a robust month for construction in October the same could not be repeated in November, as year on year contract value decreased by 30 per cent. According to the December edition of the Economic & Construction Market Review from industry analysts Barbour ABI, total construction contract value in November reached £5.5 billion (see fig 1.1), reverting back to the same total in August that occurred in the aftermath of the Brexit vote.

Major sectors such as residential, commercial & retail and infrastructure struggled to gain momentum on the month. Despite a lacklustre November, the residential sector still led all sectors with £2.1 billion worth of construction contracts, with 79 per cent of the value coming from private housing investment.

Council for Aluminium in Building
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the
bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural
Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and
the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for
well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the
architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of
aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a
whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical
standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In
addition we are driving forward the development of a national training
structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to
assist in this activity.
