On The Stump

Justin RatcliffeJustin Furness – CAB Technical Director

As I write, the UK general election campaign is entering its final stages. The need for investment in energy efficient buildings has featured in several of the political manifestos and a number of recent reports and initiatives have highlighted the potential benefits from installing energy efficient glazing, as well as the complex nature of the issue. The building sector in Europe is responsible for more than one third of the energy consumption and a similar share of the CO2 emissions associated with human activities.

Meanwhile Britain has some of the oldest housing stock in the world; it is thought that more than 8.5 million properties are over 60 years old. There is no question that something needs to be done.

The National Energy Foundation (NEF), with the support of the glazing supply chain including CAB, has recently reported on the operational energy reduction potential in the existing building stock, driven by accelerated uptake of energy efficient glazing.

New Training Opportunities as Membership Rises

Justin Ratcliffe, (CAB Chief Executive)Justin

According to the Construction Products Association Trade Survey for Q1, 2015 manufacturers reported a rise in sales for the 8th consecutive quarter. UK Growth was recorded at 2.8% in 2014, with stronger consumer spending and business investment, driving expansion in the housing and commercial construction sectors.

Reflecting concern over the availability of skilled workers, wages and salaries were the key driver of cost inflation reported by product manufacturers in Q1. There were also noticeable downward pressures on costs with the strong exchange rate lowering import cost and the decrease in the global oil price reducing fuel and energy costs.

Council for Aluminium in Building
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the
bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural
Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
