QUALICOAT Meet in Norwich
November 2018

QUALICOAT UK & Ireland held their last members meeting of 2018 at Dunston Hall in Norwich. The event was very well attended with over thirty members present from a wide selection of the membership which included powder
manufacturers, pretreatment suppliers and applicators. Chairman, Alan Maginnis, welcomed the members present and in his opening remarks reflected on the growing membership of the UK and Ireland association and the dynamic nature of the association at present.

On environmental issues, Titanium Dioxide was raised as a potential controlled substance under REACH and possible restrictions to its use. This would prove an interesting move as TiO2 is currently used in many domestic consumables such as toothpaste and white emulsion.

On the membership front, Exlabesa Extrusions Doncaster were welcomed into membership and the general secretary, Jan Lukaszewski, confirmed that a further powder coat applicator had successfully passed all inspections and their
membership will be announced very soon.

Unannounced inspections of members, undertaken by IFO, had been completed for 2018 and IFO confirmed that 2018 inspections had shown that quality of recording of procedures and testing had been of a high standard throughout the year. This follows the September QUALICOAT laboratory technicians training course, which was held at Kingspan’s Powder Coating in Sherburn, North Yorkshire. Attendance on this course is now mandatory for all members of laboratory staff to ensure the highest levels of quality of powder coating is maintained.

On technical issues, the QUALICOAT organisation is beginning to place more emphasis on testing and monitoring of processes and reducing the mechanical testing of sample panels. Whilst regular mechanical testing of samples is
crucial, the number and type of tests can be reduced to speed up the work of the members coating line testing laboratories.

It was acknowledged that there was a growing divide between QUALICOAT licence applicators and general powder coaters who often work in the same architectural field. It was felt that the association should explain in greater detail what makes a quality powder coat applicator and why the choice of applicator is so important. This would be communicated by the association in the coming months.

Copies of the fifteenth edition of the QUALICOAT Standard, complete with amendments and updates, is freely available through the UK Association website, www.qualicoatuki.org together with an up-to-date list of Powder Suppliers, Pretreatment Suppliers and Applicators. Printed literature and telephone support is available from QUALICOAT UK & Ireland Head Office in Birmingham on 0121 601 6746. The Association can also be followed on Twitter at @Qualicoat.
