While us Brits are notorious for our love of queueing, will we love the new “Q” that is forming? That is, Approved Document Q concerning the requirements for the security of new homes, which takes effect on 1 October 2015 for use in England. Will the introduction of AD Q be orderly?
The requirement set out in the Regulation is that reasonable provision is made to resist unauthorised access to new homes and any part of a building which provides access to a flat. It is applicable to easily accessible doors and windows, which will meet the requirement if they can resist physical attacks by either casual or opportunist burglars by being both sufficiently robust and fitted with appropriate hardware.

Your Green Future

The government’s current target of millions of new apprenticeships is certainly one way of supporting the next generation so that they can learn and earn but more is still needed to bridge the gap between school and industry. In this area CAB has continued to actively support ‘Your Green Future’ (organised by Severn Wye Energy Agency), a series of interactive events which bring about engagement between a wide range of professionals and young people to inspire 14-19 year olds with the range of jobs, skills and qualifications available in the green economy.

BFRC simplifies door ratings in line with windows
Energy ratings authority BFRC has responded to industry lobbying by bringing the labelling of replacement windows and doors into line, so installers will be able to offer both with the same energy efficiency rating labels.
Band increments for external residential doors will change from the current 15 to 10 points, bringing them into line with windows and and enabling them to achieve ‘A’ ratings

BREEAM goes round the world with RFO
The sustainability credentials of building refurbishment and fit-out projects around the world can now be assessed and recognised under BREEAM, following the launch of BREEAM International Refurbishment and Fit-Out
BREEAM International RFO was developed followed the success of an equivalent scheme in the UK, said the scheme’s manager, Sarah Summerson of BRE: “It provides a tailored version that can assess refurbishment and fit-out projects all over the world, by taking account of the range of local and regional standards, conditions and climates.

GGF Shop launch puts library resource online for all
The Glass and Glazing Federation is making its extensive library of publications available to everyone via The GGF Shop, a major new online initiative aimed at widening the readership of the acclaimed resource to the industry and consumers as well as members.
Both hard copies and downloads are available to order via the new retail website, which contains the full range of GGF titles, including technical data sheets, practice guides and H&S publications as well as consumer leaflets on subjects such as the organisation’s consumer protection and its Conciliation Scheme as well as independent advice on buying glazing products with confidence, all divided into ten product areas for ease of use.

New scheme aims to tackle ‘the cowboy customer’
A new scheme that aims to protect both tradespeople and consumers by a third party escrow-style account is out to recruit new members from all home improvement sectors.
The Home Improvement Guarantee (HIG) is based on a series of staged payments which are held in a Financial Conduct Authority regulated holding account, then released to the tradesman only when the consumer is happy with the work and agrees to release the funds before depositing the next staged payment into the fund.

Don’t trust fake web reviews, FMB warns homeownersn
Consumers have been urged to seek independently vetted tradespeople and not to put their faith in customer review websites following the announcement of an investigation by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) into fake customer reviews.
The warning comes from the Federation of Master Builders, whose Chief Executive Brian Berry says fake reviews are: “another string to the bow of cowboy builders and dishonest tradespeople.”
