BENNETT ARCHITECTURAL ALUMINIUM was appointed by Vinci Construction to provide a full vertical envelope façade system constructed from Kawneer’s AA110 curtain wall on the redevelopment of the UK’s largest fruit, vegetable and flower wholesaler New Covent Garden Market.

The requirement was for a high acoustic performance due to the site being close to a primary railway line. Thermal performance was also a requirement due to large glass panels allowing in plenty of natural light.

Along with the clear glazing, opaque heat strengthened laminate ‘Vanceva’ panels were used, which included integrated green interlayers. There were also large sinusoidal acoustic panels.

Managing director Lionel Grant said: “Two of the big challenges on New Covent Garden Market were meeting the thermal and solar gains presented; meeting these requirements aided the client in achieving the overall performance of the structure.

“The curtain wall also needed to accommodate significant deflection in the super structure due to large span cantilevered slabs”.
