Burglary stats show doors and
locks still vulnerable
December 2017

Home burglary figures have hit a record low in England and Wales with statistics more and more highlighting the gap between ‘basic’ and ‘enhanced’ security of windows and doors, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.

Two thirds of all break-ins (66%) were at homes with ‘no or less than basic’ security in the year to March 2017 as against less than a third (30%) with ‘enhanced security’ such as window locks and door double deadlocks while those figures are virtually reversed with 63% of homes that had not suffered burglaries.

Brisant Secure CEO Nick Dutton said in a letter to The Glazine today (full text below) that the figures show how the industry can make a difference with locks and handles that significantly improve security with little difference to the overall cost of a door.

The ONS report published this month show that domestic burglaries in England and Wales fell to 650,000 in the year to March. Of those, 74% were achieved via the door, one in three of those by attacking the lock. It also showed that 90% of non-burgled homes had window locks, as against 71% without.
