Are we bimbling
into 2016?

Justin RatcliffeJustin Furness – CAB Technical Director

Bimble v. to take a leisurely approach to adopting Building Information Modelling
(see also: BIM).

While 2016 promises to be the year of BIM, with the UK government set to require collaborative 3D (Level 2) BIM on all of its centrally procured construction projects and with the private sector likely to follow its lead, we are a little surprised at the apparent lack of demand for BIM-ready data in our sector, given the relatively low level of enquiries that we have received on the topic of late.

Sapa Dualframe advert

Although I would like to put this down to our BIM Guidance Note comprehensively answering all of our members’ questions, I suspect this is sadly not the case. At a recent meeting on the topic attended by representatives from several systems companies and product manufacturers from the wider fenestration sector, while rightly all have been busy developing their BIM strategies and objects, no one confessed to having seen a real set of Employer’s Information Requirements, for example. These are critical documents that form part of the appointment and tender documents on a BIM Project.

G 15 Awards
A night to remember

The applause has died down, the fizz of Champagne has given way to Alka Seltzer and the industry’s great and good have put away their black ties and glad-rags until next time. But in showrooms and offices around the UK are a dozen or so trophies that will go on standing as proud reminders of what it was all about and the part each played in making it the event what it was. Our photo gallery is now posted on the G-Awards website, not to mention the winners’ video which can be viewed here.

Council for Aluminium in Building
The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the
bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural
Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
