Condensation tackled

ADM Systems has helped a homeowner in South Yorkshire address the issue of condensation in their stone built farmhouse.

Soon after moving into the property, Mr Parks, the owner, discovered that the doubled glazed windows and solid stone walls were resulting in high levels of condensation.

This is because the double glazing significantly improved air tightness of the dwelling, preventing the natural circulation of air that would normally allow warm, moisture laden air to escape outside.

This situation was exacerbated by the solid stone walls, that meant a cold bridging effect during winter, was causing the inside face of the wall to remain relatively cool.

When the warm moist air inside the property met the cooler surface of the wall, it condensed causing water droplets to form on it.

Moisture in the home was being created by breathing, cooking and washing – a typical household of four people can produce up to 18 litres of moisture per day.

ADM was able to demonstrate to the owner, how a Heat Recovery Ventilation System (MVHR) could tackle the condensation issue, by lowering relative humidity of the air inside the home.
