The ‘next big thing’?

In this issue we report that Saint-Gobain has invested in US company Sage Electrochromics, which manufactures electronic tintable glass products in the US. Sage will remain an independent company marketing its SageGlass brand in North America, while Saint-Gobain will bring the SageGlass technology to Europe.

This could be the start of the next big drive towards truly carbon zero buildings – and I think that commercial buildings will be the driver for widespread specification. Coupled with modern aluminium systems, a revolution in electronic tintable glass could easily be ‘the next big thing’.

Disregarding the energy benefits momentarily (glass altering its state according to the weather, rather than a ‘one size fits all’ approach), glazing systems incorporating tintable glass is ultra-modern and desirable. I’m sure that changing the opacity of the glass will just be the start, and that future developments could include colours and movement – fantastic for promoting brands and corporate identity.

Coming back to the environment, however, while improvements in U-values mean that today’s glass helps windows to meet building regulations with aplomb, moves towards zero-carbon buildings will require further improvements if glass is to remain a viable construction material.

And dynamic glass is surely the answer. If buildings can automatically adjust the glass to suit the conditions, then they can further cut down on the use of energy; to get a single pane of glass to adjust according the amount of light, heat and glare will inevitably result in lower heating and airconditioning.

Useful and desirable – attributes that should encourage the take-up of any modern product!

CHIEF EXEC'S COMMENT

Justin RatcliffeChief Executive’s comments – Justin Ratcliffe

Responsible CAB features at BEST

'There’s still £100bn worth of work out there!’ was the succinct summary of Dr Noble Francis at a recent Chartered Institute of Marketing seminar, ‘Future of the Construction Economy’, which I invited him to speak at. The Economics Director at the Construction Products Association (CPA) provided a balanced view in the aftermath of the Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) with a number of areas, including education, of key interest to CAB members and the aluminium in building supply chain.

The despondent reaction to the government cuts in capital expenditure from £69bn in 2009/10 to £47bn in 2014/15 could be tempered slightly by the fact that this was actually £2bn more than in the emergency budget. In fact, government current expenditure was due to rise £56bn to £693bn in 2014/15. There were also some interesting sector stats.

CAB technical resource

The CEN Technical Committee CEN TC33 for windows, doors, hardware, shutters and curtain walling met on the 21st and 22nd October, and one of the items on the agenda were the security standards prEN1627-1630. This was the forum which would decide the future of these contentious Standards.

It should be remembered that prior to this meeting these Standards had been voted on and approved by TC33.

However, the UK delegation to this meeting, of which CAB was a member, after a long debate in committee, about the time taken to develop the standards, reproducibility and repeatability, of manual intervention methods of testing, were able to win a concession on these standards, which provides a way to protect the UK enhanced security standards.

Council for Aluminium in Building

The Council for Aluminium in Building (CAB) was formed in 1994 by the bringing together of three existing trade associations, the Architectural Aluminium Association, the Patent Glazing Contractors Association and the Aluminium Window Association, all of whom had been established for well over 25 years. Our mission is to support the interests of the architectural aluminium industry by encouraging the increasing use of aluminium products in architecture and the construction industry as a whole, to encourage quality and best practice, to set new technical standards and protect members' business and contractual interest. In addition we are driving forward the development of a national training structure for the sector and have received major grants from the DTI to assist in this activity.
